Returning for the first time in a dozen years, Sir John Eliot Gardiner’s period-instrument group brings the music of Berlioz to Ann Arbor as part of a celebration of the 150th anniversary of the composer’s birth that features the composer’s beloved Symphony fantastique. Obsession, madness, murder, and redemption are all portrayed in this richly Romantic score whose hero — a sensitive young musician with a vivid imagination — was a reasonable image of Berlioz himself at the time. Berlioz’s rarely-heard Lélio uses many of the same melodic themes to tell of the hero’s awakening and his ultimate triumph as a composer.
